Searching for climate change solutions, in 2007 an environmental impact study was prepared with the objective to identify and prioritize projects that will have the greatest positive impact towards reducing Stonemill’s environmental foot print, implementing an:
8–point climate solution action plan:
1) Emissions–free electricity:
Since June 2008, Stonemill has sourced clean, emissions–free power generated locally in Ontario from EcoLogoM–certified wind and low–impact hydro generators, reducing its annual emissions footprint by the following amounts: CO2: 968 tonnes, SO2: 2756 kilograms and NO: 1244 kilograms.
2) Organic grains for cleaner water:
By replacing conventional ingredients with premium–priced organic ingredients, we can contribute to a reduced use of fertilizers and pesticides reducing chemical run–off into our watersheds.
3) Alternative farming & all natural ingredients:
Stonemill is actively seeking partnerships with Ontario farmers to source locally grown ingredients and to grow grain according to Stonemill specification through low impact and transitional farming.
4) Local ingredients:
Whenever possible, Stonemill is using raw ingredients that are grown in Ontario.
5) Reducing electrical consumption:
Over the past year Stonemill has reduced its electrical consumption by over 12 per cent. This was achieved by retrofitting the entire bakery with high efficient low voltage T5 light fixtures, light and motion sensors in all common areas, installing timers on equipment to shut down at the end of each cycle to avoid any unnecessary power consumption, shutting off all machines when not in use, shutting off all non–essential computer equipment each evening, reducing the amount of light bulbs in all office light fixtures by 50 per cent, and installing capacitor banks to improve efficiency of electricity supplied.
6) Reducing water usage:
We are in the process of implementing a water conservation plan with the goal of reducing our overall waste water generation by 25 per cent by retrofitting machinery to reduce water usage and installing low–flow toilets and hand–free water taps and low–flow water taps.
7) Phosphate free cleaners:
Stonemill’s cleaning products are all phosphate–free.
8) Recycle:
By installing recycling bins throughout the bakery, every scrap of cardboard, paper, aluminum and plastic is recycled.
