The Glycemic Index (GI) is a scale that ranks carbohydrate-rich foods by how much they raise blood glucose levels compared to a standard food such as white bread.
When our bodies digest the carbohydrates in food, our blood sugars naturally rise. Low GI foods are foods with a GI of 55 or less, typically causing a slower rise in blood sugar levels. According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, eating foods with a low GI may help you to:
- control your blood glucose level
- control your cholesterol level
- control your appetite
- lower your risk of getting heart disease
- lower your risk of getting Type 2 diabetes
Stonemill Sprouted 3 Grains & Oatmeal Bread has been tested by GI Labs of Toronto and has a GI of 55, considered “low GI.”
